Help, i want to network my 2 computers both have XP?

I have 2 computers, 1 laptop and 1 desktop, i want to be able to share files from both computers locally. I have connected an RJ45 cable through both systems. how do i run d network setup wizard. I just want to be able to access files from both computers without moving from one tale to the other. Please i need an instructional answers. (i.e. step by step). as in how can configure an ip address, name d computers n shares files n folders.

You must create fires RJ45 Cross Line cable

1.Start My Network Place

2.Click on Set up a home or small office network

3.Click Next

4.Click Next

5.click on 2nd Tab (This computer connects to the internet a residential gateway or through another computer on my network

6.Give this computer a description and name

7.give Workgroup name (Ex. Home)

8.Enable File and Printer Sharing

9.click Next

10.Now on screen appearing Animation

11.click 4th tab

In the network through control panel, you can set up a small office/home network. Or go into system and set the same workgroup name with different computer names. These have to be done on both computers. Through my computer, you will need to set up shares on the drives and the folders. The Cat5 cable must be a cross-over not a straight through. When the ends are compared, the orange and green pairs will be reversed. Help menu will guide you on how to set everything.

Well some do and some don't. Laptops often come with the Mobile versions which run with reduced heat and power consumption. Other laptops simply use the regular processors. It basically all depends on the laptop manufacturer. Most of the major ones are using the lower power mobile processors for longer battery life these days.

I think manefacturing inexpensive PC is not something impossible, technology in Computers World get cheaper every 6 months, we can use a sempron package with 256mb of ram and the cheapest HD available (20GB?) and get a free OS (Linux) and free office suite ( OpenOffice ) and that's that!

Not a bad idea since everything is going to computers. I think having them in schools and libraries is a good start.

Wiring couple of computers to a wired router. Will it affect speed?

I have a high speed cable internet. I'm planning to buy a wired(not wireless) router so that I can connect it to 2 desk tops and occcasionally to a laptop.

I probably won't use the computers at the same time but wants the desk top connected to a single cable internet via a wired router. Mainly so that I don't have to hook and unhook it. Will there be any issues with it?

Will it slow down speed? Can it work that way? I'll be the only user. I'm eventually going to get a wireless but can't do it due to technical issues.

I appreciate any advise from you computer geniuses.

p.s. Where do I buy a connector "wire" for this. Will radio shack have it. I already have the router.

You won't see any performance loss at all, and here is why.

Your high speed modem talks to the internet at 1MPS or 2MPS speed, while your router talks at 10 or 100 MPS. This means that your network is MUCH faster than the outside connection. You can share drives, share printers and other stuff within your network. But also, when one computer is at one website, and the other computer is at another, the internet messages easily overlap without delay on the internet. Even if two computers are downloading some really big files, you might not notice it slow down.

Im wanting to connect two computers in the same house, but in different rooms on the internet. One computer is on a cable modem for the net, so what exactly do I need for the other computer to run off that same modem?

You'll need a switch/ruter to plug the cable modem into and cables going into computers. You might have a need for proxy software to share connection
If you do not have multiple ethernet ports, or a wireless cablemodem, and you don't want to buy any more equipment, you can't.

But, it is possible that they gave you a USB cable modem, in which case, you could possibly split it with a USB hub.

Getting a router would be the simplest way.
A router.
check your modem first, if there is an extra port for an ethernet cable or if there are antennas. if there is an extra port just buy another ethernet cable long enough for the other PC. if you see and antenna, then purchase a USB wireless adapter for the other PC. if you dont see neither, but a router.
