Because your ISP is assign you one IP address. So if you want more than one computer to the internet you need a router to give you sud-addresses for all the computers.

You can buy a second modem and connect to the cable in the same manor you are now connected with the first computer, HOWEVER. Isn't there always a however?
Several reasons why you should not do that.
The modem will cost as much or more than the router.
If you do this, you will soon be getting a second bill for a second IP service from Charter. Each modem will get it's own IP and will run independent of the other. But both will show as belonging to your account, and will be billed to you.
Using a router is a one time expense, that does not come back monthly to say hello.
You will be able to add other devices to the router, without changing you Modem set up.
The router can connect to the second computer wirelessly if you want, without having to run a cable.
My recommendation is to purchase a good wireless 802.11g router. Then purchase a USB wireless adapter for the second or for both computers.
