Marx meant it in the sense of people being distracted from reality - have computers become the opiate of the masses? If so, is that really a bad thing?
Are Computers now the opiate of the masses?hijack this
media in all forms has become the opiate of the masses. it is a good thing in the sense of a little distraction but the utter saturation is a crime. our senses are dulled and we are being fast tracked toward the deadliest opiate of all...consumerism. people kill and mame for it. shopping now is an actual past time!! there are fellow humans suffering all sorts of atricities and here we are on these boxes tapping away for our exestensial satation and wanting more and more when the other bacis needs of humans are being unmet. that is the true evil in it. in themselves computers are amazing but what the distraction allows is criminal. granted we reach out to so many people in cyber space but it cuts down flesh and bone interaction. perhaps we could find a happy medim by letting our distractions medicate us but also let them be part of the solution. for instance i use my computer not just for entertainment but to search charities and make online donations. imagine if everyone with internet access donated just $1 let alone $5 to a charity this month??? do me and yourself a favour and jump on the animals asia site right now and look at what a few dollars counts towards. i know i have gone off on a tangent but i am passionate about this and you did ask. best wishes.
