How can I physically connect two computers and create a "network"?

Is it possible to physically connect two computers by a cable and create a "network" to, for example, play multi-player games? I know I can do so with a hub, but surely there's a way to just directly hook one up to the other and go off that, right?

For clarification, I don't want to make the computers share resources, just get them to recognize the other as a separate computer and play games/transfer files like any other LAN.

Possible for little money?

Yes you can do that. For that you need ETHERNET cable. And you need CROSSOVER Ethernet cable.

It should be connected to ethernet card on both pcs that way you can play multiplayer games.

or you can directly connect a computer to another computer with a crossover cable, or null modem cable. Null modem cables are too slow for most

networks do not come cheap depends on size if for personal use, ie in home itis cheaper

If the either of the two computers is a Macintosh made in the last 6 years, then you don't need a cross over cable. Any Cat 5 ethernet cable will be fine. The Macs auto sense the network and mak the crossover for you.
