How to connect 3 computers with a hub?

I connected all 3 computers using a hub, but they cant get connected. But when i connect 1 computer to another, it's connected.

e.g: comp 1 to comp 2 = connected,

comp 2 to comp 3 = connected,

comp 1 to comp 3 = connected,

comp 1 to comp 2 and 3 [using a hub] = unplugged...

why?

The cable you use to successfully connect 2 computers together is called a crossover cable and will not work to connect a computer to a hub or router; you need a straight cable for hub connection.

You may need to install a network connection on the computers. ON PC - PC (2 PC's) its easy, because its always 1 to the other. But when there are three computers there is need for distinguishing computers, like an IP address is needed. You need to let the PC know there are 3 computers in the network and this should work.

Hope it helps!

More than 2 computers on an IP network requires a gateway/router. You can configure one of the computers to be a gateway (using ICS or other freebee software) but it would have to be on all of the time in order for the others to use the network.

A hub is just a switch and nothing more. A gateway is assigned a class C subnet, in which the gateway itself retains an IP address known to all others (like 192.168.0.1) . You could statically assign each computer a hard address if you want in the hosts file, but this becomes hard to manage. To avoid IP conflicts, gateway routers use a protocol called DHCP , in which IP addresses in the subnet are randomly assigned (leased) to any computer requesting it from the gateway. The gateway manages this lease list to ensure that each IP address is uniquely assigned.
is it a reg hub? or a switch.
