Problems while connecting two computers?

I have windows vista (in my laptop) and windows xp (in my desktop). I connected this via roll over (cross over) cable.. and also gave them ip's of 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 respectively. and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 . It has shown the connection, but connection status shows that both computers are only sending bytes but not receiving. and i cannot ping any computer ... help plizz... best answer will be given 10 points

try turning off the firewall for a while...

one more thing if above idea doesnt works

try changing cable to simple cable tht we use with local area network

are you connecting these straight through to each other or do you have some kinda of router or hub???
