Why have all the computers at my work started running slowly recently? (details follow)?

They're all XP computers that were working fine before, but now when you switch them on in the morning they take at least 5 minutes to let you do anything (it only used to be about 2), all the programs open up and run more slowly and I've often typed several words before anything appears on screen at all. We have Norton Anti Virus, but it hasn't detected any new viruses. We haven't downloaded any new programs and our use of the computers hasn't changed. The only other thing I can think of that's different is that we've had unusually warm weather recently - but we're only in the UK so it's not been that hot.

The server got a virus or picked up some spyware. Go to www.safer-networking.org and download SpyBot and run it. You'll probably be surprised to see how much spyware it found.

If you are running the full package of Norton that may be the problem. Try stopping some of its features.
The sysadmins must have made a global change of some sort to the startup process, maybe they've added something like vnc.... THEY'RE WATCHING YOU.........
