I dont mean like old dell computers but like slightly outdated pc's. I went on their website and they have very little choices for a home desktop pc. they are all new computers.

YES! My daughter bought one of their $800.00 computers, It came with a 36bp modem! She lives in an area that still doesn't have high speed connections, but 36? OMG! she was led to believe it was an up to date p/c with all the newest technology, including wifi, for when she can get it! It's a piece of crap!! We've owned 3 E-Machines, Their desk tops are unbeatable, but stay away from their lap tops! They do not last long!
Unless you build your own computers, you will always be outdated. Technology is like anything else, it trickles down from the high end stuff into the consumer level. I had DDR2 for almost a year before Dell started putting it in their computers.

What do you want to run? On the box of the software it should have minimum and recommended hardware requirements. Compare those to the Dell spec list and upgrade anything that needs it.
I would not buy from Dell. Dell is good for Business but if you are looking for something with POWER and Performance go with
