I know that the Terminator series was a gung ho action flick with guts and gore but it brought into the public consciousness the fact that this could actually happen that MAN would be no longer in control (how very Freudian methinks) the fact that computers/electronic machines becoming a viable option to take over is beyond a nightmare type scenario.

You can not use a domain name unless you have a domain controller server on the network. They need to be in the same workgroup. You need to set the exception for file and printer sharing in both firewalls and both machines need at least one resource (printer or folder) set shared. You do not say if they can connect to the internet, if so they should at least reply to a ping but you will need to try pinging by IP address, both of which should be set to automatic. If this works, the problem is simply browsing. Go to the tcp/ip properties of each machine click advanced and in the wins tab set always use netbios over tcp/ip. This may raise a warning about a missing wins address, cancel the message.

A laptop would come with the things you "need". But you might have to research on the CPU speed, how much RAM (memory) it has, how big the Hard Drive is, etc. etc. Which can be a pain when you first start out. So I strongly suggest you take a look at the Mac Book. It includes all the necessary basics with a good price tag and it's very stable. Just go for the basic model and you can forget about researching all these other PC brands.

For wireless, you want a laptop which has a built-in wireless. For example, the Mac Book. And when you go to a public library or school, your laptop will automatically searches the network for you. It's very easy. If you don't have one at home now, don't worry much about it.

a switch is a layer 2 device (for the most part) and does not have features like PAT to allow the single ip address you have to be shared among more than one computer.

Actually, the switch would work...if the server on the other side is handing out numbers by DHCP. If you are connecting your switch to DSL, then you need to check with your provider to see if they are running DHCP and, if so, how many connections you can have. If not, then you are probably running with a fixed IP or are only allowed one connection. In that case, those that are saying a router/NAT or a dual-NIC computer acting as a DHCP server is easiest solution.

The way I've done it is, i've connected both PCs to a ADSL router modem. That router modem is connected to the internet. Now none of the PCs are sharng files or programs. I think you have to set up some network settings for that sharing option. So as long as you don't do that... yur PCs won't be sharing anything.

1. If you're using Windows, you can check if the LAN is active by looking at the lower part of the screen and seeing if the icon with two computers are active, meaning, they blink from time to time. Double-clicking this icon shows whether the connection is Connected or Disconnected.

run a usb cable to one computer from the modem (if you have USB)

Honestly, for $49 you can get a linksys wrt45g? I think that is the model, your basic blue dual-antenna wireless router. Don't have to go wireless, but non wireless routers are more expensive. Really, it will save your sanity. Otherwise, your creating what is considered a proxy server.

Also agree with Acadia, NAT is huge plus, it prevents your computers from being hit from the outside, the router is the only target unless you have a virus or trojan.

I'm guessing you are talking about one of two items. First there is the Tablet PC which is a laptop with a touch screen monitor. The other thing you might be referring to would be a graphic tablet which is a tablet you set on your desk that allows you to draw as if it were on paper. These are a little different to use because the drawing is done on the pad but it shows up on the monitor, takes a little bit of getting used to.

Connect the wireless router directly to your DSL, Cable or Satellite network bridge. Via Ethernet from the only Ethernet port on the network bridge to the WAN or Internet port (usually a blue color) on the wireless router.

Then connect all your wired devices to the wireless router's ports, and connect your laptop via wireless.

This way all of your computers would be able to be on the same workgroup and see each other.

I think the better way is to connect the gatway to the wireless router direstery and then connect the hub to the wireless router by cable(for the 2 XP) and the vista will stay connecting to the wireless router
The wireless router should be directly connected to the line or modem. You then connect the wired computers to it, and the laptop by wireless. If this is all you have you need nothing else. If you have more machines than ports on the router you need a network switch connected to the router and the machines connect to the switch.

You need to be in the Domain admin group, or the built Admin group for that domain. If it is a workgroup setup, you need admin privileges on those local workstations.
Generally as a rule when you set up a Network or use 3rd party software as you mention you have to take your time and go slow and read when you set it up and at the beggining you set yourself as administrator. If you haven't done this to start with you can see but not touch.

You're fine. However, if you ever do have any questions, call your doctor or see if there's an on-call number you can use for questions. It was a lifesaver for me when I was pregnant (and paranoid).

For tiny Network You need: 2 lan cards %26 a cable (which You may have already if You have dsl). Windows can generate a home network - there are wizards that help You.

Yet another method if the 2 PC are not close - keep vital data on USB stick. Here USB sticks are ca. 20,- $ (20 Euro) for 1 GB. That is what i use to keep my data synchronized and consistent.

Portable aps for use on USB stick also exist: browsers, mail, publishing...

You could buy two USB wireless network adapters and set them up to use "Ad-Hoc" mode. This lets two computers talk to each other directly without any special equipment in the middle. Unfortunately since many wireless network adapters provide their own way of doing this, I can't provide a simple step by step approach to answer your question. There's a few benefits to doing it this way - no need to buy a router, cables or having to plug and unplug disks, but it is a little complex so you will probably need to bribe a friendly geek!!

Anyway, to hook up your Modem to use your connection with other computers you need a Router, and at least one, most likely two, Wireless Adapters. Your laptop probably already has a Wireless Adapter, so you just need to hook it up to the Router once you have it configured.

Physically hooking up a Router to a Modem is simple. Hooking up your currently hooked up computer to the Router is simple.

All you do is unhook the ethernet RJ45 Cable from the Modem, hook a ethernet RJ45 Cable into the Router, then into the Modem. Hook both Modem and Router to their respective power sources. Next, and last, (at least in this arrangment) is to now hook the ethernet cable you had hooked up to the Modem, into one of the ethernet jacks on the Router. Now, all is connected, right off the bat, as you have already done the Modem configuration when you initially hooked your computer up to your ISPs Modem.

Not without networking. You can however buy a wireless router and a hi gain wifi antenna for your system. You can also purchase a signal extender but all this will cost you some fat cash! Wireless is more vulnerable to attack also. You also might get by if the 2 PCs are in line of site with each other and may not need the signal booster. There are also directional wifi antennae on the market. If it was me, I would be stringing the cable!

Yes, you can share a DSL line w/o any router or wireless network. Just connect your 2 computers using a crossover utp cat5e cable through the ethernet ports and setup a LAN, and have one of your computer (pc1) to act as a gateway to connect to the DSL modem. In that way, the computer that does not connect directly to the modem (pc2) can access the internet through pc1. However, the main drawback is that pc1 has to be on while you access the internet using pc2.

It's not your processor as it's a solid state (no moving parts) component of a computer. The noise you are hearing will either be the CPU fan, the Power Supply Fan or the Hard drive itself.

If it's either of the fans it's probably a worn ball bearing. You'll probably have to replace it which isn't a big deal because they are fairly cheap.

If it's the hard drive then you have to figure, if it's a fairly new noise then it might mean your hard drive will be failing soon. So get your drive backed up and get a replacement drive.

You'll have to find someone who knows what they are doing and get your drive "cloned" and transferred to a new drive.
The processor itself is silent. Do you mean the fan on top of it? You will probably have to purchase a new fan, or a new heatsink assembly if they are all-in-one.

Also, are you sure it is not the hard drive? Hard drive noises are normal, but if it is especially loud or grinding, you should back up your data and try to purchase a new hard drive as soon as possible.

normally the rankings lists only go by number of computers sold and they rank the companies that way. Now if you really want to break it down your best bet is to go with a well known manufacturer because you will less likely get screwed around on the warranty. When it comes to the computers themselves, they are all the same. They all use the same brand name parts inside of them such as intel, amd and so on the only difference is the case they are in has a different brand name on it. I worked at Gateway in the service department for 9 years and I have also worked on alot of friends and family computers such as HP's, Dell, Emachines and they all have the same brand name parts in them.

If you confine this question to laptops then there is no question the only 2 brands worth looking at are Sony and Toshiba but if you are talking about top end desktops then i suggest you look at the smaller companies that will build you a pc completely to your spec. The problem with big companies is they use certain manufacturers for certain parts as they get them very cheap and these are not always the best available.
Well, it really does matter what you'll be using it for and what you're willing to spend if you really want to compare apples to apples. Every computer is different and you have to do some research into each one by coming up with the hardware specification of what you want or can afford. Then you can compare them. The actual brand name is not nearly as meaningful as the components they use in the pc you want.

If you have a network drive you can keep the outlook.pst file on that drive. Move the copy in the c:\documents and profiles\"your user name"\local settings\applications data\microsoft\outlook to your network drive. Then bring up outlook again and point to the network drive and the .pst file you moved to that drive.

You can also check the "Leave a copy on the server" box in the account settings and that will get the messages to both, but it won't sync things like calendars and contacts. This tool does. I do not know of a free one that works.

There are ways that are not illegal. If you know the static ip address for the computer you can log on it. Just go to search and type in remote. Then find "Remote Desktop Connection" right click and send to desktop. Then just click on the icon and type in the ip address here you will be able to access the other computer.

There are programs that do this, but you need to have admin access to do it. Even then, the admins of the net can track what is being done and you would not be in good shape afterwards. I would not suggest you do this. What you could do is send a msg to the IP using the net send command. Go to start, Run and type in cmd and when the cmd window pops up, put net send /? and that will give you the details you need to know to send it.

The only reason you have the USB and ethernet cable is to give you a choice on how to hook up your first computer if you were in a single computer setup. You don't use both.

Do it this way. Get a router (about $50) and two more ethernet cables. Run an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the router's 'Internet or WAN port'. Then run ethernet cables from the router's LAN ports to each PC.

The best solution is to actually get a router/firewall - preferably a wired one - wireless is still too insecure. ~$40 either linksys or D-link brand are ones I have used have had great luck with. you plug your cable modem into the WAN port, and then your 2 computers in one of the LAN ports. this also gives an extra layer of protection against hackers.

In iTunes, there is an option that asks if you want to automatically synch your iPod. You must UNCHECK this option on both computers. If you leave it checked, it means that you are telling your home computer to re-write the hard drive on your iPod, and make an exact copy of its music library onto your iPod. Then when you take it to your parent's computer, THAT computer thinks IT is supposed to make an exact duplicate of ITS library onto your iPod, so it erases the files that came from your home computer and puts the music library from your parent's computer there instead. If they're both using XP service pack 2, and you're using the built in firewall, you need to "open Windows Firewall in Control Panel, and select the File and Printer Sharing check box on the Exceptions tab" on both PCs to allow them to communicate with each other.

If you're using a third party firewall in place of the built in firewall, you need to define a zone (range of IP addresses) where all traffic is allowed.

It's always best to describer your LAN configuration when you are asking for help. List # gateways (w/ DHCP), # switches etc.. One thing that may help is to upgrade your router's firware through webmin. Routers usually fail or slowdown if they are overheated, or are flooded with too many connection from P2P apps like BitTorrent. Firmware sometime fixes issues with connection flooding as it reduces the time the connection stays alive (lease time).

In the network through control panel, you can set up a small office/home network. Or go into system and set the same workgroup name with different computer names. These have to be done on both computers. Through my computer, you will need to set up shares on the drives and the folders. The Cat5 cable must be a cross-over not a straight through. When the ends are compared, the orange and green pairs will be reversed. Help menu will guide you on how to set everything.

I have a high speed cable internet. I'm planning to buy a wired(not wireless) router so that I can connect it to 2 desk tops and occcasionally to a laptop.

I probably won't use the computers at the same time but wants the desk top connected to a single cable internet via a wired router. Mainly so that I don't have to hook and unhook it. Will there be any issues with it?

Will it slow down speed? Can it work that way? I'll be the only user. I'm eventually going to get a wireless but can't do it due to technical issues.

You won't see any performance loss at all, and here is why.

Your high speed modem talks to the internet at 1MPS or 2MPS speed, while your router talks at 10 or 100 MPS. This means that your network is MUCH faster than the outside connection. You can share drives, share printers and other stuff within your network. But also, when one computer is at one website, and the other computer is at another, the internet messages easily overlap without delay on the internet. Even if two computers are downloading some really big files, you might not notice it slow down.

You'll need a switch/ruter to plug the cable modem into and cables going into computers. You might have a need for proxy software to share connection
If you do not have multiple ethernet ports, or a wireless cablemodem, and you don't want to buy any more equipment, you can't.

But, it is possible that they gave you a USB cable modem, in which case, you could possibly split it with a USB hub.

Getting a router would be the simplest way.

check your modem first, if there is an extra port for an ethernet cable or if there are antennas. if there is an extra port just buy another ethernet cable long enough for the other PC. if you see and antenna, then purchase a USB wireless adapter for the other PC. if you dont see neither, but a router.
