Shud i continue to do Product design? Computers replacing drawing skills? Future?

I鈥檓 doing product design, I did it at a-level %26 really enjoyed it, so I decided to do this at degree level, however it is not what I expected. The a-level work was the design and development of a product from prototype stuff through to the end finish, i really enjoyed and my drawing skills came in really well. However, the product design course I鈥檓 doing at degree involves more computers than drawing, and I鈥檝e reluctantly realised that computers will replace hand drawings now if not in ten years time, this has basically tuck my best and most enjoyable attribute and chucked it out the window. I鈥檓 not much of a fan of these computers, I鈥檓 mediocre, and struggle through from one problem to the next. I don鈥檛 want to be sitting in front of a computer everyday for the rest of my life, if I wanted to do that, then I would have tuck a proper IT course. I feel like it鈥檚 a worthless degree in a way.

Are there any product designers out there who could advice me? What do you make of this? Thanku

The computer has no, inherent "design skills." It is only a tool. The fountain pen did not make drawing any easier for the artist who was used to dipping a pen in an inkwell. The pencil did not make better artists than those who used a charred stick to draw.

The computer is a tool that improves productivity, not skill. A digital artist can use the system to bring a good design from concept to product in a lot less time. And, as such a tool, it has become indespensible to the artist and the agency that hires him. I'll let you in on a little secret. Even the most skillfull digital artist still makes dozens of "thumbnail" sketches on paper, long before he boots up his computer system. What does an IT course teach anyone about design?

In your case, your skill with traditional drawing media will make you a better designer with a computer, than one who has spent no time with a paper drawing pad. You didn't "chuck" anything out the window. What you have discovered is that you have to learn a new media, the same as when you "graduated" from crayons to markers or other "grown up" tools.
