You'll need a switch/ruter to plug the cable modem into and cables going into computers. You might have a need for proxy software to share connection
If you do not have multiple ethernet ports, or a wireless cablemodem, and you don't want to buy any more equipment, you can't.

But, it is possible that they gave you a USB cable modem, in which case, you could possibly split it with a USB hub.

Getting a router would be the simplest way.

check your modem first, if there is an extra port for an ethernet cable or if there are antennas. if there is an extra port just buy another ethernet cable long enough for the other PC. if you see and antenna, then purchase a USB wireless adapter for the other PC. if you dont see neither, but a router.

Well to begin with you need to re-setup each computer as a POP3 account not IMAP.....an IMAP account mirrors the web server of that email address. Once all 3 are setup as POP3 accounts make sure the advanced tab is set to leave a copy of the message on the server hat way the other 2 can get the same message as well. The only problem with this is if you have a MB limit (as all servers do) you will have to clean out the email from the web server every so often to ensure you don't over fill your quota.

The a-level work was the design and development of a product from prototype stuff through to the end finish, i really enjoyed and my drawing skills came in really well. However, the product design course I鈥檓 doing at degree involves more computers than drawing, and I鈥檝e reluctantly realised that computers will replace hand drawings now if not in ten years time, this has basically tuck my best and most enjoyable attribute and chucked it out the window. I鈥檓 not much of a fan of these computers, I鈥檓 mediocre, and struggle through from one problem to the next. I don鈥檛 want to be sitting in front of a computer everyday for the rest of my life, if I wanted to do that, then I would have tuck a proper IT course. I feel like it鈥檚 a worthless degree in a way.

I disable it, and everything seems to go back to normal. I'm suspecting it is due to my static IP being different from the automatically detected IP address of the other computers. 4 things to check:

1. are they speaking the same protocol and is it configured correctly? By default tcp/ip using DHCP will handle all of this. from cmd prompt type ipconfig /all and check so see if they are configured on the same network number

2. is file and print sharing turned enabled? click on network places, do a properties of the adapter you are connecting to and verify that microsoft file and print sharing is installed and checked.

3. Is your firewall blocking file and print sharing? even if you never purchased a software firewall XP service pack 2 includes one in the same area as above click advanced, if it's enabled click settings then exceptions and check the windows file and print sharing box.

4. your browser service is acting up. check your eventvwr for computer browser errors. there are registry changes that can be made to make one the master browser, but If you make registry changes incorrectly you can open a can of worms.

If your DSL modem has a built in router, simply connect the 2 PCs to it.

If not, and it has a NETWORK (Rj45 / Cat5) socket, use that and connect it to a router, then connect the PCs to the router.

If it's a USB modem, ask DSL supplier if they reccomend a model of networked router/modem and get one (with wireless if you have wireless capabilities in the PCs) This request to the DSL Co is NOT because they won't all work, but if you need help, you need to know that THEY know the model

I basically know much of each area so I can manage and lead a team of those who are experts in their field. You dont need to know everyting just how to create a new system Sort of a jack of all trades, master of none. Specifically while all fields have ideas, you are taught where to start creating and implement an information system where all other fields do not know how to. It can get you out of sitting in a box from 9-5 for life. I do a job for 4-6 months and I move on and get to do something new. No boredom. I can work with my laptop wherever I am at. (preferably the beach)

YES. There is something like 50-100 virus-ware and spyware varients for the mac. Truth be told the only reason why mac is so "secure" is because it hasn't been prodded nearly as much as Windows and few want to develope malware for it(not enough macs).. Being part Unix does add a great amount to it, but there are weaknesses in the Mac OS, ask any hacker.

I know of only one Anti-spyware for the Mac, which is MacScan.

ohio44903 is absolutely correct....thats what we use if/when we work from home but you have to make sure that your computer (the one you want to access remotely) is on for it to work.....then basically you take over the computer....its really neat because if someone is working from home i can see what they are typing and working on so every once in a while i will mess with someone by putting typos in so they have to correct it
There are a couple of ways to complete the task. If its for business the security might be an issue. You could remote desktop the computer but that wouldn't be the most secure. Probably be best to get a VPN (virtual private network) solution.

Well, for a start, you will be connected to your ISP's server, so you don't want to disconnect that one.

If you run MSN Messenger or some of messenger program, that will be maybe another couple of connections.

I've just looked on my PC, and I have 60 open connections to other computers. I am not connected to any network, just have my broadband access to my home.

You have a lot to choose from. Math and computer skills can be used in many assignments onboard, from navigation to aviation support. The downside of these jobs will have you sitting at a duty station for most of your work day, inside the ship.

Photography can range from taking class pictures at Great Lakes, to working at the Navy News division, or assigned to record any sort of training on any ship. Your skill level would determine your assignment.

My advice to you would be to seriously think about what sort of working conditions you are best at. For example, if you like routine, knowing what is expected of you, and a somewhat stable enviroment, technical areas may appeal to you. That's not to say they won't be challenging. There also may be a year or more of A school before you are certified to perform the duties required.

Perhaps you may be inclined to be comfortable in ever changing circomstances. Photography could lead into travel anywhere the Navy is. You would have to work your way up to such a plumb assignment, and you would be expected to perform the basic duties of the situation you are working in. No one will assign you to take pictures on a flight deck until you are trained how to respond to an emergency. No one will assign you to take inflight pictures without flying time.

well.. emails might be trickier, unless you both have the same email program, and can use only one computer for the data... but I don't know what email program you use...

If you're on the same cable modem, you're most of the way done, you're already on the same network. right click my computer, go to properties and check the computer name and workgroup... just make sure the workgroup names match.

From there, on either computer, just right click the printers and directories you wish you share, and to go sharing and security... from there just enable it, and choose whether or not to allow the other computer to modify (add, delete, change) the files in that specific directory... and you're set.

to access the shares, you can go into "my network places" into the network and workgroup, and the other computer name. Everything you've shared to that point should be listed in there.

I believe you should also be able to to go start, run and type

\\computername\

which will open the shares as well, of course, adjusting "computername" to the name on the properties page from above...

sometime u inadvertantly or advertantly turn down the sound in other applications or programs that use sound like windows media player, rhapsody, or yahoo chat,etc, and do not turn it back up. Go to these programs/apps and turn the volume al the way up using the slider in these , then only use the computer sound adjuster to control volume in the future

I am connecting 3 computers (2 desktops and 1 laptop) to a wireless router. A desktop and the laptop are connecting via wirless connection and another desktop (media centre) is connected with an ethernet cable. I am able to use the internet but only for a few hours or less and then receive the error "page cannot be displayed" and it seems I have lost my internet connection but yet in the tray icons I can see that the internet is still connected. This occurs with all 3 computers and I have tried power cycling modem and router several times and have tried repairing the connection as well under network connections and settings. Someone has mentioned the problem may lie with my router and or the DNS settings. I've read through many online articles and followed instructions but yet no success. Can anyone help me with this?

The only time the icons in your taskbar will show a loss of internet connectivity is if you pull up an invalid ip address from your computer to your router.

my best bet would be macs. i was actually reading up on them last night in great depth, and the mac pro, the mac desktop that is, you can get for around 9,000 bucks with 3tb of space, meaning 4 harddrives, some crazy amount of ram, 2 quad-core processors, and an awesome graphics card. macs are known for their graphics, and speed. thats why they are the computer of choice for music editing, movie editing, gaming and game creating. alienware as someone mentioned earlier are very fast, but still a pc, macs run differently than pcs. partly due to their the raid systems they use on with their harddrives. look up on what raid is if you dont know. macs are also great in networking, which would also greatly help a gaming company. some companies such as pixar and any special effects in movies, of course many other industries too, will take computer like the top end mac pro and link many together, so you would then have say an 8 core computer working together with 5 others. you sometimes need that much computer for all the high end graphics and quick movements of gaming.

ive spent forever on the phone with linksys support trying to figure out why 3 of my wireless computers are getting reduced only about 8 mbps when it should be in the 20 bps range. they all three run win xp, and distance from router has no affect on speed, i tried from 1 foot still only got 8-9 mbps. theres another wireless computer, xp 64 bit, that is getting the full speed of 20 mbps. the three that aren't were all in stalled using easylink advisor, is it possible that easylink has done something to screwup the bandwidth. ive tried getting on my network without using easylink. it shows im connected but i recieve no packets, so natually it doesnt work.

It could be something loaded on the slower mnachines causing this. Also try allowing the dhcp to control the addresses. I would disable easylink and use the wireless card's own utilities to run the cards. This will reduce the load.

You really can't connect with your modem. It would be extremely slow even it you did. (Modems are only 56k where as eithernet is 100mb.) So you dont want to do it.

If you dont have eithernet just get a couple of cards and add it. You will have a much faster system.

Get a router. This will allow you to share the internet connection, but also will establish a local area network, so you can share files and printers.

If the rooms are far apart, you might try to go Wireless. Wireless can be a hassle, but give it a try. Get a LinkSys brand.

Keep in mind that wireless can't see through a brick wall, chimney or other stone-like structure. Also, place this away from a cheap cordless phone and phone station.

Yes they can ... sort of. But not really.

Many times a company will have one IP address for the outside world and make an internal network behind a gateway with a different set of network addresses. There are some ip addresses that have been set aside expressly for this puropose. 192.168.x.x is one example. A gateway/router will not make such an address visible to the outside world, but will make it visible to other computers in the internal network.

For example, my computer's network address is 192.168.2.20. It is only reachable within my home network through my gateway router. There is probably another computer with the same ip address on another network somewhere. However because the address is set aside for internal uses only, there is no conflict. Adding my two cents: It like traffic on a highway, the more cars you have the slower it goes. Your router is like a small road with the computers you have. It won't take much to slow things down if one of the systems is hogging up bandwidth for bit torrents or gaming.

Its a nice thought, but the special purpose programming to get the cluster operating correctly is the tough part. You will quickly evaporate the budget you saved on hardware on time programming.
Unfortunately many applications don't really handle multiple processors very well. The applications have to be coded so that parallel tasks can be split between processors along with the management of bringing everything back together to present the results. Where you will likely see the most benefit for a home system will be minimizing the effect of running a second application (example your "on demand" for the virus scan could only take up to 50% of the CPU power on the system, leaving the other processor for your game). A practical application for playing around at home would be to setup a web or application server on the system. Generally applications like that can initialize a few processes to keep them on hand for processing multiple request (and therefore each process can be on its own CPU).
Software has to be written to take advantage of multiple CPUS and Operating systems.

Sounds like you might have picked up some gremlins such as a computer virus or adware. If you haven't done a complete install of Windows since you got the laptops it might be time to get what you need off of them and do a recovery.

I have found that trying to get rid of viruses and adware is a pain and may or may not work. I don't even bother if it takes more than an hour of my time. Within an hour you could have your machines up and running again.

If you back up your data regularly you can reformat and reinstall windows without too much trouble. Especially since most laptop offer recovery tools to do this.

Linux cluster! Look into Beowulf clusters online (this is sort of like your super computer idea). Charity is also another great option. Either way, don't just throw them out because someone, somewhere can definitely use them.

DBAN is the way to go as others have said. As for formatting the drive, this is still going to leave files behind that are easily recovered. I recently threw out a box of old hard drives and decided to render them useless with a vice and hammer.
format all the hard-disk-drives in the computer. if you do it correctly, the computer can still be used. though you have to re-install an operating system.

You need to find out why your computer is rebooting. If it's the motherboard or some kind of hardware failure then it doesn't matter what settings you have on it, it's still going to reboot. If it's spyware then do a system restore. Run diagnostics or look for telltale signs such as amber lights, blinking lights and such and that should help you determine the problem.

The email is pulling the email off the server by one computer, so it can not be downloaded by the other computer. If you set it to where it does not delete the email on the server, you will not have this problem.

change the configuration so your email uses imap, instead of pop. then you can get a realtime view of whats in your mailbox that is accurate on both computers.

I have connected my 2 computers through crossover cable. My main pc is connected to the net through a USB cable modem. I have set the Lan IP address as 192.168.0.1 and my other- laptop as 192.168.0.2. Few months back I had no problems with the lan. Later then after I had to reinstall windows in my PC, my lan has been suffering. Whatever I do , no computer can recognise the other. Although my ethernet card shows that lan cable is connected, I cant seem to find the other computer in my network places. I have tried the network setup wizard but have failed miserably. I even tried disabling my net connection n looked whether it worked, but it vain. There is no problem with the lan cable, as I able to connect to other computers with the laptop. But at home I am not able to do so. Could any1 help me out

I agree with handy helper. You're obviously have more trouble than it's worth with the damn crossover cable. Router's are pretty cheap nowadays....so are SOHO switches (stay away from a hub, switches are better).

You can find a decent router for under $50. I would suggest going for a Linksys, Netgear, or D-link router.
