You can do this several ways. The easiest is to get a device called a networked modem, 3COM makes one. It is basically a hub with a modem on it. You can set it up to connect to your ISP, and whenever any computer hooked to it requests internet, it automatically dials it up. The cheap way to do it is to use internet connection sharing built into Windows. However, the downfall of that is that one computer must always be up and functional in order for the other one to connect.
You hook up the ethernet cable from both computers into the modem/router whichever you have, and it should work. If it doesn't then you connect your networks, and make them on the same network so they may function on the same plane of the computer system.

You should be able to share your dialup connection just like any other shared internet connection. You will need to use ICS through your Network Connections folder. Go into the Network Connections and on the left select and click the Network Setup Wizard. You may need to call your ISP and ask if you need any special cable or other hardware to configure your network connection. I am sorry I do not have detailed instructions on how to do this, but your best bet really is to talk with your ISP about this.

I love my Gateway. Their support is outstanding, and I rarely have any problems. Also, they have a good balance of memory, etc for all around use.

ok here is my dilemma. I have one desktop which is connected to the printer and connected to DSL, and running Windows Vista. Then I have a laptop which is running wireless internet with Windows XP. I am trying to be able to share files between computers, but I have the slightest Idea how to do it. I'm not really computer literate so if someone could walk me step by step on how to do it. You'll need an 8 port wireless router or switch. What you do is plug your DSL or Cable modem into it, and then configure your laptops to talk to the wireless router or switch. Make sure you put some type of encryption key on the wireless so noone can hack you. I recommend 128-Bit WEP keys. Actually, for the most part they did not have a computer monitor. Usually input was done by hand - later by paper cards - later by paper tape. Output might have been a display of lights in the beginning but usually output went to a line printer, unless they were punching cards as a result. Monitors for the most part came later.

The fundamentals of computing haven't changed, just the hardware. Back then there were logic switches, except they were large. When the transistor was invented, and later the microchip, the switches went from being huge to being microscopic, but they still existed.

You'll want to see what the current systems have in them, and what kind of hardware they support. For instance, if they're all Pentium 4 or Celeron based with motherboards that don't support more than a 400 or 533MHz front-side bus, they're probably going to be decent machines for playing high-definition games at best; they'll probably be better off as general purpose machines for the average user and not the gamer. Newer boards with 800MHz front-side busses are going to be a better system to build on, though these machines would need to run at a minimum of 2.5 ghz to be decent performers for what you want it to be.

I would make sure every machine had the realistic minimum of 1GB RAM, though 2GB or 3GB would be more realistic to offset the slower overall system speed.

With the video boards, You'd be looking at a minimum of an nVidia 6800 or 7600, or ATI x1550 based video solution with 256MB of Video RAM to get decent frame rates; 512MB is always better than 256MB in this area too.

Finally, if these computers are coming from corporate environments where they were left on constantly, you might want to look at replacing all of the power supplies; office computers are notorious for having power supplies that don't go along with upgrading the computer. With the upgraded video cards, you'll probably want to go with something that has at least 350-400 watts; more can be better, but for these systems, anything over 500 watts is total overkill (unless you can find high-output power supplies for less than the cost of a mid-range power supply, then more power to you...no pun intended).

YMU is activated on a per-computer basis. I don't think it matters how many computers are on the network since it is not a network installation.

If you try to activate it on what it thinks is a 4th computer, it will tell you that you can't.

By the way, be very careful with your activations. YMU does not keep track of computers. It only keeps track of activations and deactivations. So if you reactivate it on the SAME computer, it is going to count that as a 2nd activation. So if your hard disk is going to crash or if you reinstall your operating system, make sure you deactivate YMU first. (Yes, my tongue is in cheek, but I'm being serious about the way activations work.)

I think so. Eventually the price and performance difference between laptops and desktops will be so small, no one will want a desktop anymore. Unless of course businesses and schools maybe, since they're harder to steal.

I remember a few years back when a laptop cost at least $3000, and came with only a third of the performance of a desktop of the same price. Now you can spend $2000 on a laptop and have it beat almost any desktop up to around $1500. Eventually heat will not be a problem, battery life will be much longer, and more durable.

I also remember LCDs when they first came out. Early ones were crap, no one wanted them. They had bad resolutions, blurred, left ghosts, and were expencive. Now a LCD can match a CRT almost perfectly, better in some ways, and are the same price.

Desktops definilty could become obsolete and they definitely could not as well. It is all going to depend on what breakthroughs in computers come out next. I don't think they will right off, more so for the next 15-20 years unless theres a major breakthrough in new chip design with different semiconductors other than silicon, all your going to see without becoming too technical is laptop computers with multiple processor cores because we are at the limits of what silicon chips can go for speed, reliable that is. The only real thing that could kill desktops in the short term is if there are standards for laptops like there are for desktops. If someday you can build your own 500 dollar laptop from scratch picking all the parts yourself, like you can with desktops then there will certainly be a threat to desktops. Plus there is only so much you can squeeze into a laptop for computer parts without it becoming more of computer that dell is now retailing which is basically a mix of a full desktop and laptop.

Then restart both machines.

Try to go see them again over the network.

If you cant see them over the network, ping them again to make sure that they still see each other. Then go to start - run - and type \\192.168.x.x and see if that takes you into the other computer's shared files.

Yes you can link all three together on the same router.

The router provides a door for your computers to access the broadband network. Most routers have multiples of 4 ports on the back so you can have up to four computers physically plugged in.

Wirelessly, as long as the router is wireless and all of your computers are wireless then you can have all three connected via radio, normally below channel 12. You may need to get into your router (http://192.168.1.254 normally) to access signal strengths, channels, access etc.

Could be the resolution, the graphics card, the size of the monitor, ...

If you got different Os's then they have different Arial fonts.
Most likely you have turned on the 'ClearType' option on the display properties of one of your monitors.

ClearType is only useful for LCD monitors, not CRTs. LCD monitors only look good when set the their native resolution though (usually 1024 X 768 and higher).

To change the ClearType options do the following:

1) Go to 'Display' under 'Control Panel'.

2) Go to the 'Appearance' tab.

3) Click on the 'Effects' button.

4) Select the 'method to smooth the edge of screen fonts' to your taste.

If you have an LCD make sure you set it to the native resolution. Check you monitor documentation.

I love them because I do about 80% of my repair work on them. I hate them because of poor quality, bad customer service, and predatory business practices). Who buys Dell? People that are new users, those that complete basic tasks, those that believe "Dude your getting a Dell" marketing etc. I do have to concede that Dell has become a little more in tune with market demands in that they are allowing people a little more wiggle room in creating their own systems. But don't be fooled. Do this for yourself, go to Yahoo and search Hate Dell there are 4,680,000 hits for Hate Dell. This along with blogs and user groups has to tell you something. I think when people decide to purchase something, like a computer, they should be happy before, during and especially after the sale. I don't think many Dell customers can say this. In any case, this is my opinion and I hope you, and others, find some truths here.

Are built to factory specs, not the users. And 3. In general, last about 12 months tops. Custom built PCs are built to the customers exact needs, not whatever makes the BIG company the most profit. 1. Antivirus software to remove the virus. Search for google for removal of virus for the virus name you have in your system.

2. If you cant get antivirus or for any reason cannot do the above, simply get the Hard disk formatted instead of buying a new tower. Formatting the hard disk will remove the virus if its not very very harmful virus which attacke\s hard disk boot sectors also.

dude, just reinstall wiindows, cause usually trojans are pretty good at evading virus program and ther is a good chance its already infected your sytem files which are inaccesible by antivirus prgorams.
I agree with skptechnomedia. You should hurry download the antivirus like what skptechnomedia mentioned.

If it's too late and all your files in the computers are badly damaged, I recommend that you format the hard disk.

When i say format, i mean re-install the WINDOWS XP or whatever Windows you have. If you have a recovery CD (usually comes along with the purchase of your computer), that would be easier.

To me, a computer is the connection between India and America, since most of my relatives live in India. I haven't seen them for years, but the computer, more specifically, the internet helps me stay connected with them. Computers in general are very helpful; you can organize work, make files, type up many paged essays and there is a spell/grammar check for word documents. There's not too many worries about mistakes. Printing is very easy. International business can be done by your fingertips. You can create nice powerpoint presentations about office/school work.

I think mostly computers are good, there may be some problems like if viruses come, or it gets too old, or SPAM on the internet.

I would rate computers 9/10 nevertheless. Very good invention. Thank you inventor of computers!

Are you on a budget, or is the sky the limit? If you are on a budget, by the best E-Machines you can get! For some reason they cost 1/3 what everything else costs! *I* am using an E-Machine, and I only paid 1K for it (including the monitor I chose). The computer it replaced cost 3K (including monitor). The E-Machines computer is SO MUCH BETTER IN EVERY WAY I cannot begin to tell you! Yes to play music, you really do need broadband. You need to see what is available to you in your area. Check your cable company for a cable connection and check your phone company to see if your phone line wualifies for DSL service.

You can open up the history sidebar (in firefox) by going to History - Show in Sidebar. There, you can delete any specific sites. Just don't forget to close it after you delete.

Well on the blue tab look for the music tab and then where it says search keyword artist search for whatever you might desire. If a song is not there i recommend a service called Project Playlist, it allows you to add songs to your own playlist which once completed can be added to many social communities like myspace or facebook.

I use Windows Vista... Only because it's what my laptop came with..

But I like Windows XP Pro better. really only because there's far less bugs in that system. There's still compatibility issues with Vista But, eh. It's at least working for what i need it for.
I like macs the best, becuase it is presented in a soft and easy way that I much prefer to the sharper movement of the PCs. I use a PC at home and Macs at my school.

You can't "extract" windows from a computer using the OS anymore than you can extract any other installed program that no longer has the installer. You'll need fresh windows cd's to install on your fresh system.

Your HP software will probably not work on the new computer. Most OEM software is designed to only work on their system. Plus the EULA states that you can only install the software on one computer. You may need to buy a retail copy of Windows for it to work. You can't extract Windows, it has to be installed.
You cannot install Xp from you HP bundled softwre pack on a non hp machine, it usually wont let you, that is the first thing it checks for. there is also no way to pull out just the xp from that bundle unless you have the tools, its a little extensive but can be done. your better off finding out how you can download xp from the itnernet. look up bit torrents or check out www.minonova.org.
I don't think you can use the Cd's on the new system cos its usually able to detect that its not HP so it probably won't let ya.

You can't change the ip address the way you do it is hook the computer up to another server like another house or wifi signal.
Depends on your situation.

If its a manual ip address, then you go into network connections....properties...tcp/ip settings and change it.

if its an automatic(dhcp) address, you can't change it.
Your IP address is dynamically assigned by your ISP. It changes every so often, but you cannot force it to change.

The only way to try and "force" a change in your IP address is to power-off your modem for an extended amount of time (overnight). It's possible when you turn it back on you will be assigned a new IP address.

You may also want to clear out your cookies and CCleaner is great free program that will do this for you (it also removes all traces of your online activites).
