HELP PLEASE !! What is the Average Speed For Filesharing through 2 Computers On A Wireless Network?

I have 2 wireless computers, one a desktop the other a laptop. I have them connected through a wireless modem and both running the internet. I have set up file sharing through windows and am able to acces and share files between both computers.

My question is what should the speed be when transfering files from one computer to the other through home networking in windows.

And have set up a home network using the networking wizard through windows and selecting each computer is connected to the internet through a residential gateway,, this i think meaning my wireless modem ( an orange livebox )

what should be the speed i get when transfering files between computers ?? they both have excellent signal as the modem is just at the other end of the room and both adapters are 54mbps. but at max i am only getting 0.5 mbps speed when transfering the files, surely it should go faster than this, should it ???
